Bobby Muncy is versatile and an in-demand saxophonist, recording artist, composer, arranger, educator, bandleader, and mouthpiece refacer in the Washington, DC metro area.
Raised in Miami, FL and currently residing in the metropolitan Washington DC Area, he studied music at Florida State University (BA) and University of Maryland, College Park (MM). He studied saxophone and woodwinds under Chris Vadala, Dale Underwood, William Kennedy and Adrien Re.
He has performed or recorded with The Temptations, The Platters, The Spinners, The Orioles, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The El Reys, The Messthetics, The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, The Scott Gwinell Jazz Orchestra, Wayna, Dzine, Phantom Band, The Fran Vielma Jazz Orchestra, John Lee, Saltman/Knowles, Middle Distance Runner, Michael Bowie, James King, Joe Herrera, Brad Linde, Sarah Hughes, Anthony Pirog, Butch Warren, Michael Jellick, Luke Stewart, Lena Seikaly, Elike, The Funk Ark, Leigh Pilzer, Allyn Johnson, Taboo Combo, Janel Leppin-Pirog, Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra, Ornette Hawkins, Manuel Valera, Amy Bormet, Brian Settles, Dog Fashion Disco, Gregg Karukus, Chiek Hamala Diabate, Joe Piscopo, Dave Ballou, Dennis Chambers, The Metro Parks Honors Jazz Band, Paul Keller Big Band and many others.
For over 25 years, he has also led his own large and small ensembles including the Radiohead Jazz Project, Big Bastard Big Band, The Bobby Muncy Quartet and Quintet, The Hardbop Special, The Elliot Smith Jazz Project, Kung Fu Bastard, New Standards Quartet.
He has composed and arranged music for various ensembles such as The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, Chick Hall, jr., Anthony Pirog, The El Reys, Dale Corn, The Scott Gwinell Jazz Orchestra, The U-liners, Sriram Gopal, Eric Bogess, University of Maryland 5:30 band and various student ensembles at American University and Prince George’s Community College.
In 2008 he released his first album as a leader “On the Outside Looking In” to warm reception.
Bobby has performed at The Blue Note-NY, The Detroit Jazz Festival, Blues Alley, Twins Jazz, Bohemian Cavern, Cliff Bell’s, Bert’s-Detriot, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, The Blue Llama, Sotto, Bossa Bistro, Mr. Henry’s, The Van Dyke Cafe, Churchill’s, Black Cat, DC 9, Eighteenth Street Lounge, The Kennedy Center, Calle Ocho, An Die Musik, The 8x10, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland-College Park, Atlas Performing Art Center, PGCC Performing Arts Center, Good Morning Detroit, Bethesda Blues and Jazz, Westminster Church Jazz and Blues nights, The Kennedy Center, and many other venues in New York, DC, and Baltimore, Miami, Haiti, Italy.
He is a co-founder and board member of the DC Jazz Composer’s collective, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization committed to increasing the performance of original jazz compositions in the Washington, DC metro area which has presented concerts featuring the music of Reginald Cyntje, Amy Bormet, Brian Settles, Jon Kokur as well as recorded an album at XM Radio featuring the music written by members of the collective, Bobby Muncy, Gene D’andrea and Kevin Pace.
Bobby has also become an in demand mouthpiece refacer and expert consultant working on the mouthpieces of several of DMV’s top saxophonists helping them to achieve their sound.
As an educator, Bobby formerly held the position of Assistant Professor and Applied Music Coordinator at Prince George’s Community College teaching advanced music theory, ear training, applied woodwinds and brass, digital audio, music appreciation and was director of the PGCC Jazz Ensemble.
He continues to present performances and collaborations in the Washington DC area, Baltimore, New York City.
